W. Chapman et E. J. Schnabel, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2HPzzcQ\"><em>The trial and crucifixion of Jesus &#8211; Texts and Commentary<\/em><\/a> (Hendrickson Publishers, 2019). Comme son nom l&rsquo;indique, il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un recueil de textes comment\u00e9s concernant le proc\u00e8s et la crucifixion de J\u00e9sus.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus is a comprehensive sourcebook for those looking to gain a more robust understanding of this event through the eyes of ancient writers. Featuring extrabiblical primary texts&#8211;along with a new translation and commentary by David W. Chapman and Eckhard J. Schnabel&#8211; this work is relevant for understanding Jesus&rsquo; last days.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The significance of Jesus&rsquo; death is apparent from the space that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John devote to the Passion narrative, from the emphasis of many speeches in the book of Acts, and from the missionary preaching and the theology of the apostle Paul. Exegetical discussions of Jesus&rsquo; trial and death have employed biblical (Old Testament) and extrabiblical texts in order to understand the events during the Passover of AD 30 that led to Jesus&rsquo; execution by crucifixion. The purpose of this book is to publish the primary texts that have been cited in the scholarly literature as relevant for understanding Jesus&rsquo; trial and crucifixion. The texts in the first part deal with Jesus&rsquo; trial and interrogation before the Sanhedrin, and the texts in the second part concern Jesus&rsquo; trial before Pilate. The texts in part three represent crucifixion as a method of execution in antiquity. For each document,<strong> the authors provide the original text<\/strong> (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or Latin),<strong> a translation, and commentary<\/strong>. The commentary describes the <strong>literary context and the purpose of each<\/strong> document in context before details are clarified, along with observations on the contribution of these texts to understanding Jesus&rsquo; trial and crucifixion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Comme on peut s&rsquo;en douter, cet ouvrage vaut son pesant d&rsquo;or, et j&rsquo;aurais bien aim\u00e9 l&rsquo;avoir en mains quelques ann\u00e9es plus t\u00f4t ! Il permet, pour chaque th\u00e9matique int\u00e9ressant le proc\u00e8s et la crucifixion de J\u00e9sus, d&rsquo;avoir des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de contexte : <strong>juridiques et historiques<\/strong> essentiellement. Il ne fournit pas le fin-mot de l&rsquo;histoire, il se contente seulement de mettre \u00e0 disposition les<strong> sources primaires<\/strong>. Il reste donc encore un travail critique important pour rendre compte de ces t\u00e9moignages antiques : c&rsquo;est le travail des historiens. En effet les informations sont nombreuses et parfois contradictoires (r\u00e9ellement ou de prime abord) : par exemple, qu&rsquo;en \u00e9tait-il du <em>jus gladii<\/em> en Palestine au premier si\u00e8cle (cf. Jn 18:31, Jn 19:6) ? Quelle \u00e9tait la comp\u00e9tence du sanh\u00e9drin, et jusqu&rsquo;o\u00f9 pouvait-il aller ? Comment interrogeait-on des t\u00e9moins, et dans quel cadre l\u00e9gal ? Comment \u00e9taient prononc\u00e9es et mises en oeuvre les peines capitales ? Qui \u00e9tait Ponce Pilate, et quel \u00e9tait son pouvoir ? Quelles langues parlait-on \u00e0 J\u00e9rusalem ? J\u00e9sus a-t-il blasph\u00e9m\u00e9 (en pronon\u00e7ant le nom divin) lors de son proc\u00e8s ? Quelles charges ont \u00e9t\u00e9 retenues contre lui ? Quel genre de peine \u00e9tait la crucifixion, et comment \u00e9tait-elle mise en oeuvre concr\u00e8tement ?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">C&rsquo;est \u00e0 ce genre de questions que cet ouvrage apporte, non pas des r\u00e9ponses (h\u00e9las), mais des \u00e9l\u00e9ments d&rsquo;information copieux.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Je n&rsquo;en suis qu&rsquo;au premier tiers du volume &#8211; et il me faudra sans doute le relire plusieurs fois pour le bien dig\u00e9rer. A ce stade, la partie la plus int\u00e9ressante est celle de la \u00ab\u00a0Charge of blasphemy\u00a0\u00bb (pp.98-130), qui s&rsquo;int\u00e9resse au motif d&rsquo;inculpation de J\u00e9sus : blasph\u00e8me, mais lequel ? \u00e9nonciation du nom divin ? La \u00ab\u00a0conclusion\u00a0\u00bb formul\u00e9e par les auteurs est que ce n&rsquo;est probablement pas le cas (\u00e9nonciation du Nom en tant que tel), mais que le blasph\u00e8me pouvait \u00eatre caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 sur les pr\u00e9tentions messianiques (Fils de l&rsquo;homme intronis\u00e9 \u00e0 la Droite de \u00ab\u00a0la Puissance\u00a0\u00bb, ex. Mt 26:64), ou en raison des propos sur le Temple (Mt 24:2 ; cp Ps 110:1, Dn 7:13) &#8211; cf. p.130. En fait de \u00ab\u00a0conclusion\u00a0\u00bb, il s&rsquo;agit de synth\u00e8se des textes traduits et comment\u00e9s, avec des indications bibliographiques et quelques propositions.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ne vous y m\u00e9prenez donc pas : il ne s&rsquo;agit pas de <em>pr\u00eat-\u00e0-penser<\/em>. Certes les auteurs semblent bien avoir ratiss\u00e9 la litt\u00e9rature antique pour composer ce floril\u00e8ge th\u00e9matique, mais leurs conclusions ne sont jamais dogmatiques, et l&rsquo;abondance des perspectives propos\u00e9es peut m\u00eame avoir l&rsquo;effet inverse : l&rsquo;impression d&rsquo;un vaste chantier \u00e0 creuser, et \u00e0 mettre en ordre. C&rsquo;est ainsi dans cette \u00ab\u00a0limite\u00a0\u00bb que r\u00e9side tout l&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat de cet opus : au-del\u00e0 des ouvrages historiques qui inondent le march\u00e9 et proposent une version sc\u00e9naris\u00e9e de ces sources, sans asp\u00e9rit\u00e9 ou si peu, il est possible d\u00e9sormais de puiser commod\u00e9ment aux sources, pour non seulement enrichir sa connaissance du contexte historique, mais aussi et surtout favoriser r\u00e9flexion et critique des sources.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a
