Perhaps it here means the second sabbath after the first, that is, the next one, if it is original. But it has been suggested that the existence of the word is due to a scribal mistake. Perhaps some scribe inserted « first » and another scribe changed it to « second » by adding it here and using the common method of deleting a word by putting dots above it. The another scribe copied both words as one, not noticing that the word « first » had been deleted. If the word is original, it is certainly easy to see why some copyists omitted it.

Plus sympathique, l’apparat de Willker (disponible in plene toujours dans le module PAR) produit toutes les informations utiles à la compréhension du problème : les variantes traduites, le degré de certitude (rank : C) et un commentaire.

σαββάτῳ] Alex: p4 ‭א B L 33 157 1241 copsa copbo(pt) WH NRtext CEI Rivtext TILC Nv NM Alex/César.: 69 Alex/Byz: 579 César.: f1 205 2542 Occ.: W itb itc itl itq itr1 Byz: 1365 l547 syrp syrpal syrh(mg) eth ?: Diatessarona Diatessaroni Diatessaronn

τοῖς σάββασι] (voir Matthieu 12:1; Marc 2:23) Alex: copbo(pt) Byz: Lect

σαββάτῳ δευτεροπρώτῳ] Alex: A Δ Ψ 1006 (1243) 1342 NRmg Rivmg Alex/Byz: C X 892 César.: (f13) 565 (1071) 1071 1424 arm César./Byz: 700 Occ.: D 1292 1505 1646 ita itaur itd itf itff2 vg Ambrose Jerome Byz: E H K Θ Π 0233 (28) 180 597 1009 1010 1079 1195 1216 1230 1242 (1253) (1344*) 1344c 1546 2148 2174 Byz syrh goth slav Caesarius-Nazianzus Chrysostom Paschal Chronicle Epiphanius Gregory-Nazianzus Isidore Theophylact ς ND Dio

σαββάτῳ δευτέρῳ] César.: geo

sabbato mane] Occ.: ite

Voir A Student’s Guide to New Testament Textual Variants

τοὺς στάχυας καὶ ἤσθιον ψώχοντες ταῖς χερσίν] Alex: (‭א) A Δ Ψ 33 Alex/Byz: C X César.: f1 f13 565 Occ.: W itaur itff2 itl vg Byz: K Θ Π 28 1009 1010 1079 1195 1216 1242 1344 1365 1546 2148 2174 Byz Lect syrh goth ς

Perhaps some copyist introduced πρώτῳ as a correlative to ἐν ἑτέρῳ σαββάτῳ in ver. 6, and a second copyist, in view of 4:31, wrote δευτέρῳ, deleting πρώτῳ by using dots over the letters—which was the customary way of cancelling a word. A subsequent transcriber, not noticing the dots, mistakenly combined the two words into one, which he introduced into the text. Alternatively, as Skeat has suggested, by dittography the letters βατω were added to σαββάτῳ.
