Quelle image saisissante ! Sait-on bien cependant ce qu&rsquo;il faut comprendre par \u00ab\u00a0<strong>lis des champs<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb ? Dans le Nouveau Testament les deux seules mentions de cette fleur sont faites par J\u00e9sus, pour \u00e9voquer leur beaut\u00e9 (Mt 6.28, Mt 6.29, Lc 12.27), et dans la foul\u00e9e leur caract\u00e8re fonci\u00e8rement \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re (Mt 6.30). Les autres mentions bibliques indiquent qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;une plante (Ct 2.1), de la partie d&rsquo;une plante (Ct 6.2), d&rsquo;un motif pour la sculpture (1R 7.19), voire d&rsquo;un instrument de musique ou d&rsquo;un air connu (Ps 45.1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">[<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clcfrance.com\/dictionnaire-des-mots-et-des-expressions-de-la-bible_ref_DEQD010.html\">DEB 325<\/a><\/span>].<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0 \u00a0En fran\u00e7ais le <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lys\">lis<\/a> (ou lys, orthographe vieillie) \u00e9voque principalement une plante ornementale, souvent blanche, <a href=\"https:\/\/jardinage.lemonde.fr\/dossier-480-lis-lilium-fleur-royale-excellence.html\">symbole de pouvoir royal<\/a>. Le lis appartient \u00e0 la famille des <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liliaceae\">liliace\u00e6<\/a>\u00a0(liliac\u00e9s) et au genre <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_(homonymie)\">lilium<\/a>, lequel regroupe de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces. Ces liliac\u00e9s on la particularit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00eatre pourvus d&rsquo;un bulbe \u00e0 croissance rapide.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Les fleurs \u00e0 floraison \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re \u00e9mettent de signaux visuels (formes et couleurs) et olfactifs (odeurs, parfums) forts pour attirer les pollinisateurs. (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liliaceae\">Liliaceae<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ces fleurs constituaient ainsi un exemple id\u00e9al : \u00e9closion rapide, beaut\u00e9 insolente, existence \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re. Mais J\u00e9sus d\u00e9signait-il une esp\u00e8ce en particulier ? <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_candidum\">Lilium candidum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_longiflorum\">lilium longiflorum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_chalcedonicum\">lilium chalcedonicum<\/a> ? Autant dire que la r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 cette question a suscit\u00e9 des d\u00e9bats sans fin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Each-According-Its-Kind-Plants\/dp\/0826700403\">Koops 2012 : 167<\/a>) ; la modestie impose donc de s&rsquo;en tenir \u00e0 l&rsquo;essentiel : passer en revue les arguments, et relever les candidats cr\u00e9dibles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0 \u00a0Le terme grec \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd d\u00e9signe le <strong>lis en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2mp9gTn\">Bailly 1137<\/a> : \u00ab\u00a0lis,<em> en g\u00e9n<\/em>. <em>p opp.<\/em> <em>\u00e0<\/em> \u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u0301\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd, lis blanc\u00a0\u00bb, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2l4X2Po\">Carrez 146<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2mtl6vw\">Ingelaere-Maraval-Prigent 87<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2m3D5ZB\">Georgin 451<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34zJNrP\">Pessoneaux 839<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2N7NfSP\">DDB 668<\/a>), le <strong>lis<\/strong> <strong>blanc<\/strong> en particulier (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2VWmmVD\">LES 413<\/a>, \u00ab\u00a0white lily\u00a0\u00bb; <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2N6GXFa\">ML 1014<\/a>, \u00ab\u00a0lis, <em>surtout<\/em> blanc, parfois lis rouge\u00a0\u00bb) ; certains lexiques \u00e9mettent toutefois des r\u00e9serves sur l&#8217;emploi du vocable dans le NT : \u00ab\u00a0une esp\u00e8ce de <strong>fleur sauvage<\/strong> \/ lis [?]\u00a0\u00bb (<a href=\"https:\/\/maisonbible.fr\/fr\/48554-dictionnaire-grec--francais-du-nouveau-testament--2eme-edition-9782920147614.html\">Cochrane 108<\/a>), \u00ab\u00a0in ancient authors \u03ba. refers to a variety of &lsquo;lily&rsquo;, but in NT apparently used <strong>generically of wild colorful growth<\/strong> <strong><em>flower<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2l3wYEf\">Danker 208<\/a>\u00a0; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Each-According-Its-Kind-Plants\/dp\/0826700403\">Koops 2012 : 166<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-Biblical-Library-17-Set\/dp\/B001LQ9KJ4\">GED III : 405<\/a>). Le <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2kwqf5o\">LSJ 996<\/a> (voir aussi <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2l6Nqn5\">GE 1177<\/a>) apporte des pr\u00e9cisions int\u00e9ressantes en citant les esp\u00e8ces pr\u00e9cises qu&rsquo;on pense avoir identifi\u00e9 chez des auteurs anciens : un <strong>lis blanc<\/strong>, le <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_candidum\">lilium candidum<\/a><\/strong> (\u03a4h\u00e9ophraste) ; un <strong>lis rouge<\/strong> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03c6\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd, Th\u00e9ophraste), identifi\u00e9 au <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turk%27s_cap_lily\">Turk\u2019s cap lily<\/a><\/strong> (= <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lis_martagon\">lis martagon<\/a>) ou au <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilium_chalcedonicum\">lilium chalcedonicum<\/a><\/strong> ; enfin le <strong>lotus<\/strong> \u00e9gyptien (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nelumbo_nucifera\">Nelumbium speciosum<\/a>). Cette mention, chez H\u00e9rodote (<a href=\"http:\/\/remacle.org\/bloodwolf\/historiens\/herodote\/euterpe.htm#55\">Hist. 2.92<\/a>), m\u00e9rite d&rsquo;\u00eatre cit\u00e9e in extenso : \u00ab\u00a0il para\u00eet dans l&rsquo;eau une quantit\u00e9 prodigieuse de <strong>lis<\/strong> que les \u00c9gyptiens appellent lotos [<strong>lotus<\/strong>]\u00a0\u00bb (\u03c6\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f55\u03b4\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9 <strong>\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b1<\/strong> \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f71, \u03c4\u1f70 \u0391\u1f30\u03b3\u1f7b\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f73\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9 <strong>\u03bb\u03c9\u03c4\u1f79\u03bd<\/strong>). Comme le lis est rare en Isra\u00ebl (ex. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/naturalhistoryof00tris\/page\/462\">Tristram 1883 : 463<\/a>), certains ont rapproch\u00e9 l&rsquo;\u00e9quivalent h\u00e9breu usuel de \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd, \u00e0 savoir \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05df (<i>\u0161\u00fb\u0161an<\/i>), du terme \u00e9gyptien <i>se\u0161en\u00a0<\/i>qui signifie <em>lotus<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/35K4d25\">DEB 740<\/a>). De l\u00e0 s&rsquo;est r\u00e9pandue l&rsquo;id\u00e9e que les colonnes du Temple de Salomon, en forme de <i>\u0161\u00fb\u0161an <\/i>(1R 7.19, 1R 7.22), tout comme le rebord de la mer d&rsquo;airain (1R 7.26), devaient avoir une forme de lotus bleu (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_bleu\">Nymphaea caerulea<\/a>). Cette hypoth\u00e8se est d\u00e9pendante de l&rsquo;identification de \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05df au <em>n\u00e9nuphar<\/em>, ou <em>lotus<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.fr\/books?id=vgA4TQzM8mAC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;hl=fr&amp;pg=PA94#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">Keel 1998 : 94-98<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2quZPDV\">ZEB III : 1051<\/a>) et admet une influence \u00e9gyptienne\u00a0jusque dans la partie la plus sacr\u00e9e du culte isra\u00e9lite (ex. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/31vHaoj\">GDB 1273<\/a> vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/fr\/wol\/d\/r30\/lp-f\/1200002745\">EP II : 146<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2BqLjz5\">AD 918<\/a>). Elle est discutable pour au moins deux raisons : 1) le sens de \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05df n&rsquo;est \u00e9videmment pas <em>lotus<\/em> compte tenu de son emploi dans l&rsquo;AT (cf. <em>infra<\/em>), et 2) les influences architecturales dans le Temple de Salomon ne sont pas \u00e9gyptiennes, mais syro-ph\u00e9niciennes (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2o1iy98\">de Vaux II : 154-155<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/32xAYgS\">B\u00c9A 482, 599<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33WDzkT\">ESV\/ASB 480<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2BrbEx1\">CBSB 572-573<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Faut-il identifier le <i>\u0161ou\u0161an, <\/i>la fleur aim\u00e9e du Cantique des Cantiques (Ct 2.1 etc), et celle dont J\u00e9sus soulignait la somptueuse beaut\u00e9 (Mt 6.28-29, Luc 12.27-28), avec le lis blanc, comme le font la plupart des traducteurs ? On peut se le demander. Tr\u00e8s rare aujourd&rsquo;hui en Palestine, cette fleur l&rsquo;\u00e9tait-elle moins autrefois ? (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2J33tv0\">DAB 199<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">En fait, traduire \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd par <strong>lis blanc<\/strong> ne s&rsquo;impose pas. Il pouvait d\u00e9signer un <strong>lis rouge<\/strong>, chez les \u00c9gyptiens un <strong>lis d&rsquo;eau<\/strong> (lotus\/n\u00e9nuphar), ou le <strong>lis<\/strong> dans un sens relativement l\u00e2che (pour nous) d\u00e9signant toute <strong>fleur<\/strong> color\u00e9e, sauvage ou cultiv\u00e9e, de la famille des liliac\u00e9es (et sans aucun doute aussi, d&rsquo;autres familles connexes, comme celle des <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amaryllidaceae\">amaryllidac\u00e9es<\/a>). On ne saurait trop insister sur un point : les donn\u00e9es n&rsquo;autorisent aucune identification pr\u00e9cise avec certitude (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2l6Y1ym\">BDAG 567<\/a>). Il pouvait avoir sous les yeux un parterre d&rsquo;an\u00e9mones rouges (parsem\u00e9 de coquelicots qu&rsquo;on trouve aussi en terre sainte, et qui leur ressemblent beaucoup). D&rsquo;autres sugg\u00e8rent l&rsquo;amaryllis, mais aussi le gla\u00efeul, l&rsquo;iris, le colchique, le narcisse, ou m\u00eame aucune en particulier&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0 \u00a0A mon avis, la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e9tait pr\u00e9cise, car les comparaisons qui \u00e9maillent le \u00ab\u00a0sermon sur la montagne\u00a0\u00bb sont imm\u00e9diatement compr\u00e9hensibles, visibles, palpables.
