Elle n&rsquo;en est que d&rsquo;autant plus intrigante. Elle devait para\u00eetre initialement pour 1918, \u00e0 l&rsquo;occasion du centenaire de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Biblique Protestante de Paris, fond\u00e9e en 1818. Mais son \u00e9laboration a pris plus de temps que pr\u00e9vu. Commenc\u00e9e en 1911, elle n&rsquo;a \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9e qu&rsquo;en 1947. Ses objectifs \u00e9taient ambitieux : il s&rsquo;agissait de tenir compte de tous les t\u00e9moins du texte, produire une traduction n&rsquo;occultant pas les asp\u00e9rit\u00e9s du texte, le tout assorti de notes abondantes et d&rsquo;introductions d\u00e9taill\u00e9es. Ce fut Alfred Lods qui fut en charge de l&rsquo;Ancien Testament, et Henri Monnier du Nouveau.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Si l&rsquo;entreprise \u00e9tait ambitieuse, et si elle a pris plus de temps que pr\u00e9vu, elle n&rsquo;en a pas moins relev\u00e9 le d\u00e9fi qui \u00e9tait le sien.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">De s\u00e9rieux efforts sont faits pour rendre en fran\u00e7ais les caract\u00e8res sp\u00e9cifiques des \u00e9crivains bibliques, en particulier quand il s&rsquo;agit de po\u00e9sie. Des introductions substantielles, des notes historiques, g\u00e9ographiques, arch\u00e9ologiques, fournissent tous les \u00e9clairages que peut fournir la science biblique du moment. La Bible du Centenaire, si elle ne conna\u00eet pas une large audience, ouvre cependant des voies nouvelles en ce qui concerne la traduction et les annotations. Les Bibles qui para\u00eetront ult\u00e9rieurement b\u00e9n\u00e9ficieront de cette entreprise exceptionnelle men\u00e9e par des sp\u00e9cialistes protestants francophones. (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2ffijzd\"><strong>Delforge<\/strong> 1991 : 275-276<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ainsi s&rsquo;exprime Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Delforge sur cette version. Il ajoute qu&rsquo;elle n&rsquo;a jamais eu d&rsquo;\u00e9dition populaire, ce qu&rsquo;explique par ailleurs Daniel Lortsch :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Cet immense ouvrage, fruit d&rsquo;un labeur consid\u00e9rable men\u00e9 par des hommes comp\u00e9tents, n&rsquo;a gu\u00e8re eu de succ\u00e8s. Evidemment les quatre gros volumes sont mieux \u00e0 leur place dans une biblioth\u00e8que sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e que dans les mains du lecteur moyen et ne sont pas \u00e0 la port\u00e9e d&rsquo;une bourse modeste. On aurait pu en faire para\u00eetre une \u00e9dition \u00e0 plus petit format. En r\u00e9alit\u00e9 l&rsquo;ouvrage \u00e9tait probablement trop savant pour le lecteur moyen, et surtout il se heurtait \u00e0 la m\u00e9fiance des croyants \u00e9vang\u00e9liques, en particulier \u00e0 cause de ses notes souvent lib\u00e9rales. (&#8230;) Il faut ajouter cependant que les traductions ult\u00e9rieures ont pu b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de ce qu&rsquo;il y avait de bon dans cette entreprise, qui ne se solde donc pas uniquement par un \u00e9chec. (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hoasE4\"><strong>Lortsch<\/strong> et Nicole 1984 : 247-248<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Les vues parfois lib\u00e9rales exprim\u00e9es dans les notes, et le format tr\u00e8s on\u00e9reux, ont sans doute eu raison de cette entreprise consid\u00e9rable, \u00ab\u00a0dans l&rsquo;ensemble tr\u00e8s fid\u00e8le\u00a0\u00bb (Lortsch). Alfred Kuen pr\u00e9cise que cette version \u00ab\u00a0a servi de mod\u00e8le \u00e0 la Bible de J\u00e9rusalem et \u00e0 la T.O.B.\u00a0\u00bb et qu&rsquo;elle est \u00ab\u00a0malheureusement (&#8230;) devenue introuvable\u00a0\u00bb (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fFdhN5\"><strong>Kuen<\/strong> 1996 : 37<\/a>). On trouve d&rsquo;autres d\u00e9tails int\u00e9ressants sur cette version dans l&rsquo;ouvrage dirig\u00e9 par <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2ffrLm7\"><strong>Bogaerts<\/strong>, <em>Les Bibles en fran\u00e7ais du Moyen \u00c2ge \u00e0 nos jours<\/em><\/a> (Brepols, 1997 : 184-185), notamment la liste des collaborateurs et les livres bibliques qui leur ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confi\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">C&rsquo;est bien en raison de l&rsquo;\u00e9dition populaire du Nouveau Testament seul, chez Payot en 1929, qu&rsquo;une partie de cette entreprise a pu \u00eatre connue du grand public.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-r7jjMtC6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6373\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png?resize=300%2C152\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png?resize=300%2C152 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png?resize=768%2C389 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png?resize=1024%2C518 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/areopage.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2209172.png?w=1436 1436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">J&rsquo;ai en mains l&rsquo;\u00e9dition \u00ab\u00a0maniable\u00a0\u00bb du NT, qui est d\u00e9j\u00e0 un beau volume (270 x 180 mm), et je dois dire que, sans \u00eatre tout feu tout flamme, en raison sp\u00e9cialement de quelques mots un peu vieillis \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0, je suis tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9ablement surpris par la haute tenue de la traduction, par ses tours g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement heureux y compris dans les portions difficiles, et bien s\u00fbr par ses notes pr\u00e9cises, souvent amples, et qui justifient de mani\u00e8re sereine et argument\u00e9e les prises de position. (<strong>Jean 1.1<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">D&rsquo;aucuns jugeront la traduction \u00ab\u00a0lib\u00e9rale\u00a0\u00bb, pour ma part je la trouve simplement honn\u00eate et exacte, pour des raisons dont je me suis d\u00e9j\u00e0 expliqu\u00e9 (<a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2013\/08\/15\/jean-1-1c-reponse-a-mjb\/\">1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2014\/06\/11\/jean-1-1a-dieu-ou-dieu-peters-2014\/\">2<\/a>, et\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2017\/05\/01\/jean-1-1-sed-perseverare\/\">3<\/a>). (<strong>Matthieu 11.12<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">L\u00e0-encore la traduction est pr\u00e9cise, et n&rsquo;introduit pas de parti-pris. La note <em>g<\/em> pr\u00e9cise par contre que le <em>locus<\/em> est obscur, et que trois explications peuvent \u00eatre avanc\u00e9es. Je trouve cette note d&rsquo;une concision et d&rsquo;une efficacit\u00e9 remarquables. La derni\u00e8re explication, peut-\u00eatre celle plus sp\u00e9cialement pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e par les traducteurs, est celle qui me para\u00eet plus clairement \u00e9tay\u00e9e dans le contexte imm\u00e9diat de Matthieu (mais sens diff\u00e9rent chez Luc ; cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/21\/matthieu-11-12-ou-la-violence-au-royaume\/\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/22\/matthieu-11-12-luc-16-16-probleme-synoptique\/\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/areopage.net\/blog\/2013\/11\/03\/matthieu-11-12-et-le-texte-hebreu-de-shem-tob\/\">3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Vous aurez peut-\u00eatre remarqu\u00e9 les lettres \u00ab\u00a0P\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0S\u00a0\u00bb en marge : il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un syst\u00e8me commode indiquant par <strong>M<\/strong>, les passages qui se trouvent aussi dans Marc, <strong>P<\/strong>, qu&rsquo;il est particulier \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9vangile en cours, et <strong>S<\/strong> qu&rsquo;il appartient \u00e0 une source commune \u00e0 Matthieu et \u00e0 Luc. (<strong>Romains 9.5<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Les doxologies pauliniennes ne sauraient \u00eatre invoqu\u00e9es pour \u00e9tayer le moindre soup\u00e7on trinitaire. Chez Paul, la gloire du P\u00e8re est toujours pr\u00e9\u00e9minente, et J\u00e9sus en est le dispensateur ou l&rsquo;interm\u00e9diaire de pr\u00e9dilection. Certes Paul n&rsquo;h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 faire du Christ un \u00eatre divin auquel est confi\u00e9 le nom au-dessus de tout nom (<strong>Philippiens 2.6,9<\/strong>) mais c&rsquo;est \u00e0 la gloire de Dieu, le P\u00e8re (<strong>Philippiens 2.11<\/strong>). Cette \u00ab\u00a0gloire du P\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb est r\u00e9currente sous \u00ab\u00a0sa\u00a0\u00bb plume (ex. Romains 6.4, \u00c9ph\u00e9siens 1.17, <strong>Philippiens 4.20<\/strong> ; Romains 4.20, 15.7, <strong>16.27<\/strong>, 1 Corinthiens 10.31, <strong>2 Corinthiens 4.15<\/strong>, <strong>Philippiens 1.11<\/strong>, 2.11, <strong>1 Timoth\u00e9e 1.17<\/strong>). A mon sens, d\u00e9fendre que Christ est \u00ab\u00a0Dieu au-dessus de toutes choses\u00a0\u00bb est une aberration. Une lecture m\u00eame rapide des passages pr\u00e9cit\u00e9s, \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de\u00a0<strong>1 Corinthiens 15.27-28<\/strong>, devrait suffire \u00e0 s&rsquo;en convaincre.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ici donc Goguel et Monnier ne sont donc pas si subversifs ou lib\u00e9raux qu&rsquo;on pourrait croire. Ils rendent compte du texte, en essayant de ne pas trahir le sens, du moins le sens tel qu&rsquo;ils le comprennent. C&rsquo;est une illusion de penser qu&rsquo;il y aurait d&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9, le parti-pris, et de l&rsquo;autre, une pure objectivit\u00e9. Pour traduire, il faut d\u00e9j\u00e0 comprendre le texte. Cette compr\u00e9hension passe par une n\u00e9cessaire <em>interpr\u00e9tation<\/em>. (<strong>Philippiens 2.6<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Pour avoir travaill\u00e9 plusieurs ann\u00e9es sur ce verset (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2xYnQWu\">Fontaine 2010<\/a>), je sais combien son interpr\u00e9tation, et donc sa traduction, est d\u00e9licate. Mais quand c&rsquo;est difficile, il faut rester dans son bon sens, examiner le contexte par\u00e9n\u00e9tique imm\u00e9diat, la nature du morceau, sa provenance \u00e9ventuelle, son substrat r\u00e9el ou fantasm\u00e9. Deux interpr\u00e9tations diam\u00e9tralement oppos\u00e9es s&rsquo;opposent, qui ont toutes deux de bons arguments. D&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9 Christ qui\u00a0ne se pr\u00e9vaut pas de son \u00e9galit\u00e9 avec Dieu. Il faut alors expliquer\u00a0la nature de sa k\u00e9nose, et son exaltation. Et l\u00e0, mieux vaut ne pas \u00eatre un <em>idi\u00f4t\u00eas<\/em>\u00a0(cf. Actes 4.13) ! De l&rsquo;autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, Christ, \u00ab\u00a0en forme de Dieu\u00a0\u00bb car il partageait sa condition et m\u00eame sa nature, n&rsquo;a pas cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 s&rsquo;accaparer l&rsquo;\u00e9galit\u00e9 (de traitement, d&rsquo;honneur) avec Dieu, et s&rsquo;est humblement an\u00e9anti sans chercher de <em>gloriole<\/em>&#8230; A l&rsquo;examen, les justifications s\u00e9mantique (une expression idiomatique inexistante) et th\u00e9ologique (en fait Christ, ne se d\u00e9partit de sa nature nature divine&#8230; dans sa nature humaine) de la premi\u00e8re hypoth\u00e8se sont\u00a0aussi suspectes que d\u00e9ficientes.
