Et c&rsquo;est vrai : l&rsquo;abondance de manuscrit est impressionnante : on compte actuellement 60 000 manuscrits grecs dans le monde, toutes \u0153uvres confondues. Dans cet ensemble, un manuscrit sur dix est un manuscrit du NT (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2s6K8iX\">Amphoux 2014 : 15<\/a>) !<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">When compared with other works of antiquity, the NT has far greater (numerical) and earlier documentation than any other book. Most of the available works of antiquity have only a few manuscripts that attest to their existence, and these are typically much later than their original date of composition, so that it is not uncommon for the earliest manuscript to be dated over nine hindred years after the original composition. (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2soNyk3\">Porter et Pitts 2015 : 50<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">A la masse de manuscrits s&rsquo;ajoutent les anciennes traductions, en syriaque, copte, latin, gothique (cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2tijZNu\">Aland 1989 : 52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2rXbWrL\">Metzger-Ehrman 2005 : 85-126<\/a>)&#8230; sans compter les plus de 500 000 citations bibliques des P\u00e8res de l&rsquo;Eglise (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2rXfqud\">Vaganay-Amphoux 1986 : 76<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2rnTjhX\">2008 : \u00a046<\/a>\u00a0; <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2s6K8iX\">Amphoux 2014 : 145<\/a>). Autant dire que le texte du Nouveau Testament est bien attest\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Mais la quantit\u00e9 ne rime pas n\u00e9cessairement avec la qualit\u00e9 : parmi ces nombreux t\u00e9moins, combien remontent aux premiers \u00e2ges apostoliques ?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">En posant la question ainsi, on suppose que plus les documents sont antiques, plus ils sont authentiques. Mais ce n&rsquo;est pas tout \u00e0 fait exact, ainsi que l&rsquo;explique Metzger :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the early years of the Christian Church, marked by rapid expansion and consequent increased demand by individuals and by the congregations for copies of the Scriptures, the speedy multiplication of copies, even by non-professionnal scribes, sometimes tooks precedence over strict accuracy of detail. &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2t2mJPE\">Metzger 1981 : 21<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">On ne saurait nier qu&rsquo;un processus de transmission des textes\u00a0canoniques du NT ait \u00e9t\u00e9, tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, \u00e0 l&rsquo;oeuvre, \u00e0 Antioche ou Alexandrie, comme l&rsquo;indiquent le recours homog\u00e8ne au <em>codex<\/em> et\u00a0aux <em>nomina sacra<\/em> notamment. Mais il ne faut pas oublier que l&rsquo;\u00e2ge d&rsquo;un codex ne fait pas l&rsquo;\u00e2ge d&rsquo;un texte :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">D&rsquo;un mot, <strong>c&rsquo;est l&rsquo;\u00e2ge du texte et non l&rsquo;\u00e2ge du codex qui doit entrer en ligne de compte<\/strong>. Des manuscrits relativement r\u00e9cents ont un texte tr\u00e8s ancien ; des manuscrits anciens ont un texte tr\u00e8s corrompu. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2rXfqud\">Vaganay-Amphoux 1986 : 100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">L&rsquo;explication principale est facile \u00e0 comprendre :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Un codex du VIe si\u00e8cle peut \u00eatre la reproduction d&rsquo;une bonne copie perdue du IIe, elle-m\u00eame transcrite directement de l&rsquo;original. Un codex du IVe si\u00e8cle peut avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 mal copi\u00e9 sur un exemplaire fautif du IIIe, et, pour comble, \u00eatre s\u00e9par\u00e9 du texte primitif par une dizaine d\u2019interm\u00e9diaires. On le voit, on aurait tort de se fier plus \u00e0 celui-ci qu&rsquo;\u00e0 celui-l\u00e0. (&#8230;) L&rsquo;autorit\u00e9 qu&rsquo;on accorde volontiers \u00e0 un ancien codex repose sur une base qui est parfois trompeuse : la proximit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;original. Ce qui p\u00e8se d&rsquo;un plus grand poids, c&rsquo;est le nombre et surtout la qualit\u00e9 des copies ex\u00e9cut\u00e9es entre l&rsquo;original et le manuscrit. &#8211; ibid.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Il importe donc de rester prudent, sans sombrer dans des extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s : en effet si l&rsquo;\u00e2ge d&rsquo;un manuscrit n&rsquo;est pas un argument en soi, toute variante dans un tel document doit faire l&rsquo;objet d&rsquo;une\u00a0consid\u00e9ration bien plus grande qu&rsquo;une le\u00e7on n&rsquo;apparaissant, par exemple, que dans quelques t\u00e9moins d&rsquo;\u00e9poque m\u00e9di\u00e9vale&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Aussi est-il n\u00e9cessaire de savoir \u00e0 quel point le NT est attest\u00e9 dans les manuscrits les plus anciens, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire durant les Ier, IIe et IIIe si\u00e8cles. Pour\u00a0le mesurer, rappelons que, \u00e0 la date de 2015, on comptait <strong>128<\/strong> papyri, <strong>2911<\/strong> manuscrits en majuscules, <strong>1807<\/strong> manuscrits en minuscules et <strong>2381<\/strong> lectionnaires, soit <strong>7227<\/strong> manuscrits (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2soNyk3\">Porter-Pitts 2015 : 50<\/a>). Depuis, pour les papyri, le chiffre est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 <strong>135<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/ntvmr.uni-muenster.de\/manuscript-workspace\">INTF<\/a>\u00a0; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csntm.org\/Manuscript\">CSNTM<\/a> ; pr\u00e9sentation commode et quasi compl\u00e8te : <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_New_Testament_papyri\">List of NT papyri<\/a>\u00a0; <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2s6K8iX\">Amphoux 2014 : 37-39<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ces chiffres sont impressionnants, mais la plupart des manuscrits, surtout les plus anciens, sont fragmentaires et, pour les papyri, seuls les P45, P46, P47, P66, P72, P74 et P75 peuvent \u00eatre appel\u00e9s des \u00ab\u00a0livres\u00a0\u00bb (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2s6K8iX\">Amphoux 2014 : 37<\/a>). Pour avoir une id\u00e9e assez fiable de l&rsquo;attestation du NT, il faut donc s&rsquo;int\u00e9resser au contenu, puis \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge des t\u00e9moins, et id\u00e9alement visualiser la r\u00e9partition du contenu par si\u00e8cle. Ce travail fut fait en son temps par K. et B. Aland (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2tijZNu\">1989 : 78-85<\/a>), et a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis \u00e0 jour en 2007 par une pointure de la discipline, E.J. Epp (in: <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2t2Gg2u\">Capes et al. 2007 : 77-117<\/a>). La diff\u00e9rence porte sur le <strong>P4<\/strong>, qu&rsquo;Amphoux place \u00e0 la fin du IIe s. et Epp au IIIe, de m\u00eame que pour les<strong> P64+P67<\/strong> (Amphoux, fin IIe ; Epp, complet, mais plut\u00f4t avec un accent sur les II-IIIe s.), le travail de Epp est exhaustif, et livre des informations capitales, pas tout \u00e0 fait attendues.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">(&#8230;)\u00a0the raw quantity of early manuscripts is sizable\u2014and abundant\u2014in proportion to the relatively small collection of mostly brief New Testament writings from the latter half of the first century and the first quarter of the second. Up to and around 300 C.E., sixty-three manuscripts, as a group, contain all the New Testament books except 1\u20132 Timothy and 2\u20133 John. <strong>However, to a large extent\u2014doubtlessly much greater than expected\u2014we are dependent upon manuscripts with ten or fewer surviving leaves and upon documents containing only one or a few New Testament writings<\/strong> (p.<strong>104<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Pour illustrer la situation, Epp tente une m\u00e9taphore :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">To describe this complex situation in terms of a metaphor, the textual\u00a0transmission of the New Testament is a forest, thick with trees at the latter\u00a0stages, but with trees thinning as we move backward toward the beginning\u00a0of the process. In fact, only a few trees stand there, but the ground\u00a0is randomly scattered with hundreds of leaves, and in many cases it is difficult\u00a0to identify even the kinds of trees from which they have come. ibid<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Dans ce lot, les manuscrits\u00a0<strong>P46<\/strong>, <strong>P66<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>P45<\/strong>, <strong>P75<\/strong>, et <strong>P72<\/strong> sont d&rsquo;une importance particuli\u00e8re, tant en raison de leur \u00e2ge (IIe-IIIe.) que de leur taille (de <strong>30<\/strong> \u00e0 <strong>95<\/strong> feuillets). Parmi ceux-ci le <strong>P66<\/strong> r\u00e9v\u00e8le des pratiques scribales pas toujours tr\u00e8s rigoureuses quant \u00e0 l&rsquo;exemplaire copi\u00e9, et le <strong>P66<\/strong> (c. 200 AD) une copie peu attentive.
